There are three different French Immersion programs available in Prince Edward Island: Early French Immersion, Mid French Immersion and Late French Immersion.
Early French Immersion
Early French Immersion begins in Kindergarten and runs through Grade 12. French Immersion students achieve the same curriculum outcomes as students registered in the English Program however their language of learning and of instruction is in French, as follows:
Kindergarten - Grade 3: 90 per cent
Grades 4-6: 65 per cent
Grades 7-9: 50 per cent
Grades 10-12: 25 per cent
Fourteen PSB schools have an Early French Immersion program: Tignish, St. Louis, Bloomfield, Elm Street, Parkside, Greenfield, Westwood, Eliot River, Sherwood, Spring Park, West Kent, Glen Stewart, Stratford, and Montague Consolidated.
Mid French Immersion
Instruction begins in Grade One in a Core French setting (30 minutes per day), followed by implementation of French Immersion at Grade 4, as follows:
Grades 4-6: 75 per cent
Grades 7-9: 50 per cent
Grades 10-12: 25 per cent
One PSB school has a Mid French Immersion program: Gulf Shore.
Late French Immersion
Late French Immersion begins in Grade 7. Instruction in French is as follows:
Grades 7-8: 80 per cent
Grade 9: 50 per cent
Grade 10-12: 25 per cent
Five PSB schools have a Late French Immersion program: Kensington Intermediate-Senior High school, Queen Charlotte, Stonepark, East Wiltshire and Birchwood.
