The Public Schools Branch employs speech language pathologists who identify, diagnose and treat communication disorders. They provide a range of clinical and professional services in the following disorder areas:
speech sounds
language
fluency (stuttering)
pre-literacy and literacy skills
voice and resonance
cognitive-communicative
communication in the context of other diagnoses or impairments, such as autism spectrum disorders, down syndrome and cleft-lip and palate
augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)
Speech language services include prevention, assessment, intervention and consultation. The Public Schools Branch provides two services:
all areas of communication disorders for Kindergarten to Grade 6 students
augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) services for Kindergarten to Grade 12 students
Referrals for Kindergarten to Grade 6 services are made through consultation with a PSB speech language pathologist and the school-based student services team. There is a separate referral process for intermediate and senior high school students requiring AAC services. Students requiring AAC services are served in collaboration with occupational therapists and assistive technology facilitators, as required.
