Regular parent-teacher communication is an important part of student learning. Dates for parent-teacher interviews can be found on the provincial school calendar. These dates align with when your student’s report card is sent home. These interviews are your opportunity to ask questions about your child's progress and to discuss any issues.
Scheduling of Interviews
Public Schools Branch schools across Prince Edward Island will send information home with your child about how they schedule their parent-teacher interviews, and when and where they will be held.
Generally, if you have students in a primary, elementary or consolidated school, you will receive a notification with your assigned time, or you may be asked to schedule a time that works best for your family. If you have any special requests, please contact your child’s teacher as soon as possible.
If you have students in an intermediate or high school, your school will inform you when and where parent-teacher interviews will be held. Since many students at this grade level have several subject-specific teachers, there may not be a set time to meet, you’ll be able to attend the session during specific hours and approach the staff members who teach your child. These sessions are commonly held in the school gym or library. It’s a great idea to have a list of your child’s teachers when you arrive at the school.
What to Expect During the Interview
Parent-teacher interviews are a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, strengths, and areas for growth. Teachers will provide updates on their academics, behaviour, and social skills. If there are specific topics you’d like to discuss, feel free to let the teacher know.
For parents and guardians who need translation services to participate in parent-teacher interviews, schools will ensure the necessary resources are available for a successful meeting. Teachers, interpreters, or members of the student’s learning team may join to assist parents or guardians through the process.
What to Bring
Bring any questions you have and, if applicable, samples of homework, report cards or other items you want to discuss. We want this to be a helpful and productive conversation for everyone involved. Some teachers, parents or guardians may also include your child in the session to have them guide everyone through their accomplishments.
If you have questions about parent-teacher interviews, contact your child's teacher or the school directly.
